Unanswered Questions in Smallville

Starting in 2001, this Superman origin series ran for ten seasons, ending in 2011, totaling 217 episodes; the longest-running DC live action series, showed the world how a traditional superhero could be broken down, studied and expanded upon in previously unforeseen ways that work very well. Clark Kent started off as a timid, socially awkward teenager and ended the show as the world’s greatest hero and the leader of the most powerful team of superheroes in the world. Throughout its ten-year course, the show had some threads that it started, but never really ended. There were others that were concluded with indications that there would be a proper conclusion to them, but never were addressed again. These unconcluded things brought up questions that needed answering. This article will expand on the questions left.

What Happened to Byron?
Byron Moore was a troubled teen who appeared in season 2. He was one of the many abnormal teenage cases that happened in the small town of Smallville. The town was notorious for its kryptonite-related cases but Byron stood out from them, as he was not infected by or exposed to kryptonite for his peculiar condition to take over his life. Clark and the others found out that Byron was always being locked up and kept out of the public eye by his family. Suspecting child abuse, Clark, Lana (whom Byron had a crush on), Pete and Chloe get involved and end up finding out that he has a monstrous alter ego that is raging and out of control. Even Clark, with his powers, has a hard time keeping him under control. At the end of the episode, Clark and the gang understood Byron’s situation and why the parents were doing what they did. The episode ends with him being put in the hospital under special lights to at least prevent him from transforming. But what happened to him after that? Did he get better? He was never mentioned again for the remainder of the series.

Where is Pete Ross?
Pete Ross was Clark’s best friend in his high school years. Although he was only a main character for two seasons, he made quite an impression on viewers of the show. His short tenure was still valuable to the viewers, and we got to see how Clark related to regular humans mostly through his interactions with Pete before it became more with Chloe, with whom he could not relate to as organically because she had a crush on him. After leaving Smallville at the end of the second season due to the pressures and dangers of keeping Clark’s secret, he appeared for one episode in season 6 and got stretching powers due to exposure to kryptonite-laced chewing gum. After a little adventure with Clark due to the trouble that got him caught up in, he left the show and went to find his own way once more, never again appearing, not even for Clark’s wedding with Lois in the finale. So, where did he go? What happened to him?

What About Lana Lang?
There is no superhero story without a love story somewhere in there, and it was no different with Clark’s journey in Smallville. Lana Lang, for eight seasons, was in a tumultuous relationship with Clark, and it always went from getting together, to breaking up, to making up, to breaking up again. The show had her as the primary love interest at the start, which was good, as Lana was Clark’s biggest crush in his younger years, having met Lois only when he started work at the Daily Planet. Eventually, the show had to move past Lana and make space for Lois to take over as the main love interest. This was a difficult task to accomplish, as there was so much onscreen history between Clark and Lana. They managed to find a way to write her out in a very sad way that left a huge gap in Clark’s heart that Lois filled in ways that even he never knew could be filled. Lana ended up with kryptonite radiation and it made it impossible for her to be anywhere near Clark without killing him. This made a relationship between them impossible to exist, and so, she left Metropolis and Kansas, to stay as far away from Clark as she could, forever. It was a heartbreaking episode in the eighth season. What became of her after that? What happened? We never get the answers.

What Happened to Lucas Luthor?
The relationship the Luthors had with each other was, for lack of a better term, complicated. They all despised but respected each other, and all shared a common trait: cunning. Lionel Luthor was no saint in his younger years. Aside from him having killed his parents to claim their insurance money (which he used to start up Luthorcorp), he had extramarital affairs and had even planned on making his children become enemies so that he could favour the strongest one. The show gave Lex Luthor three siblings. The first one we saw was Lucas Luthor, who was born out of an extramarital affair that Lionel had with a lady he met in his endeavours. The second sibling we saw was Gabriel Grant, who was a clone of Lex’s biological brother who died as a baby. The third one was Lutessa (Tess) Mercer. The main focus will be with Lucas Luthor, as he went through a bit of an adventure with his biological family, and somehow managed to trick both Lex and Lionel and took over the complicated game of chess they played with each other. There was no stopping him. He played very well against Lionel Luthor, and managed to fool him into thinking that he was dead. Lex then vowed to keep him protected and keep his actual survival a secret from their father, and send him away to a safe place. The thing is, after that, we never hear about him again. We never see him again. What happened to him? Since the fourth season, there has been nothing about his existence.

Are the Kawatche Caves no Longer Important?
The Kawatche caves were an interesting part of Smallville lore. About 500 years before the events of the series, an unnamed kryptonian came to Earth and met the Kawatche. He made a profound impression on them and they told the story of is arrival and stay through paintings in caves. Over time, the caves began to transform into kryptonian technology stores, and it is where Clark Kent learned how to read the kryptonian language. He also learned about the story of Naman, who would become enemies with Sageeth, who was almost like a brother to him, and his destiny to be with a dark haired woman. Clark learned a lot from this cave regarding his destiny, and it eventually took on the role of an early Fortress of Solitude. He would go there to learn about krypton and communicate with Jor-El. After the construction of the Fortress of Solitude, however, he never went back to the caves. It seemed that the 500 years of their existence were no longer important to the show. They were never mentioned again, and never came up as a plot point. What happened to them? They were under LexCorp, too, and we know that Lex was obsessed with kryptonian items and prophecies. Did he do anything with the caves? We never see anything conclusive with them. They were just abandoned.

What Happened to Clark in University?
We saw Clark going through the trials and tribulations of high school, and how he found a way of balancing his secret life with his other, more conventional life. In the fourth season, Clark finally finished high school and was ready to begin the next chapter of his life; a quest that was also included in the fifth season. He was going to go to Metropolis University, which was the best university around, but ultimately decided to go to Kansas State University so that he could be close to Lana, even though it did not quite offer what he wanted and was not as good as Metropolis University. In the long run, wanting to be close to her backfired because she ended up going to Metropolis University, leaving him in that university and having to deal with the choice of making such a rash decision based on a crush. But, aside from a few classes he attended, we never really see what happens to his tertiary education. He only attends classes in the fifth season and then never goes again for the rest of the show. He even manages to get a job at the Daily Planet, but we don't see anything regarding his qualifications aside from the high school graduation.
