THE PREQUEL TRILOGY – PLAN VS EXECUTION

gibsonkecmoz

Plans vs executions are always a hot topic, especially when it comes to Star Wars. There is so much lore that can be explored. There are so many stories that can be told in the galaxy far, far away, and many stories that can be told about the galaxy far, far away, especially in regards to how things were going to play out in the start of things. George Lucas may not have had everything planned out to the finest details when crafting the prequel trilogy during the original trilogy days, but he did have an overall plan for it. It was always going to talk about the story of Anakin, showing us how he went from being a great hero of the Republic to the main enforcer of the Empire. This article will explain what George had in mind for a few of the major things we see in the prequel trilogy that ended up being different once the movies were in production.

1. The Jedi Council

We see that the Jedi Order had a very complex structure that would take even the most seasoned fans a while to explain properly. From rankings like padawan, knight, master and grandmaster, we also had those who belonged to the Jedi Council. According to different sources of the lore, the temple of the Jedi, which is situated in Coruscant, the city-planet capital of the Republic, had four towers, and each tower was the chamber of a council. The four Councils were: the Council of Reassignment; the Council of Reconciliation; Council of First Knowledge and; the Jedi High Council. The Jedi High Council is the only one that is shown in the movies by George Lucas. We see that the Jedi High Council has 12 members in it, and to be a member, you have to have at least achieved the rank of master. There is a lot to be done for one to achieve that rank and there were limited seats in the Council. The way George Lucas first envisioned the Jedi High Council was different. He initially wanted the council to be composed of three members. The three members he had in mind at the time were Ki-Adi Mundi, Yoda and Mace Windu. Over time, the idea evolved into what we end up seeing in the final product.

2. The Clone War

Everyone who is a Star Wars fan is all too familiar with the “Clone Wars.” We have seen two animated projects depicting the events of the war, and both have been very well received by fans and critics alike. In fact, there is a brewing war between fans of the first show depicting the events of the war, called “Clone Wars”, and the second one which was called “The Clone Wars”. That subtle difference in the titles confuses so many people. The Clone War was a galaxy-wide conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The Galactic Republic had an army of genetically modified clones to fight for them, while the CIS had an army of droids to fight for them. This is why the conflict was called the Clone War. The was first mentioned in A New Hope, and seemed to be something that was just mentioned in passing, but it inspired many stories to be told. The fans couldn’t just let that one line slip away. George Lucas had a very different idea for the Clone War back when he was writing the original trilogy. The clones in question weren’t going to be the clones of a bounty hunter. They were going to be the clones of none other than Lando Calrissian, meaning that even he was a clone himself. That seems very bizarre now that we think about it, considering how much we have seen already, but that was the way it was originally planned out to be like. Lando was going to be from a planet of clones, and the planet Bespin would have had these clones working there.

3. Anakin’s Fall to the Dark Side

Anakin Skywalker is the most important character in the history of Star Wars. His actions reshaped the galaxy and kept it in a state of turmoil decades after his death. None of what Emperor Palpatine did would have happened if it weren’t for Anakin. But how did Anakin, the chosen one, the champion of the Jedi, come to be corrupted by the galaxy’s ultimate evil? As we saw in the prequels, he was groomed from a very young age and his ego was always fed by the conniving, genial Palpatine, the Sith Lord in disguise. However, this was not always the plan that George Lucas had in mind. Remember when Obi-Wan told Luke that Anakin was seduced by the dark side of the Force? Well, it was more literal than one would imagine. What George Lucas had in mind is that Anakin would be seduced by a dark side witch and join the dark side through that. Not many other details about that story have been revealed, but that was his original plan. Whether she was Luke and Leia’s mother or not is up for debate, but it would be very difficult to explain how things ended up being the way they were in the original trilogy. And if she wasn’t Luke and Leia’s mother, then Anakin would have a lot of explaining to do to Padme in Star Wars Heaven.

4. Anakin’s Deformation

Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith featured the most emotional lightsaber duel in the Star Wars saga. Anakin fighting Obi-Wan was such a horrible thing to see, and it broke the hearts of many, seeing how the friendship between the two ended. It was made worse because of what Obi-Wan had to do to Anakin to put an end to the fight since he wouldn’t listen to reason. He had to cut his limbs off and leave him burning alive, refraining from dealing the final blow because he just couldn’t get himself to, hoping that the flames would do the job he wouldn’t. That is what ended up making Anakin finally don the black armour and solidify his transition into the sith lord everyone knows: Darth Vader. The original trilogy showed us what he looks like beneath the mask, and it was an equally haunting image, but we were happy to see that Vader actually had some good in him after all to really mind what he looked like. He got to see his son with his own two eyes. The way he ended up in the armour was different from how George Lucas originally meant for it to be. In fact, there was material already that stated that Vader fought Obi-Wan on a volcanic planet. This was before it was decided that Anakin and Vader were the same person. It was also revealed that Vader had fallen into a pit of lava, which is why he needed the armour. Revenge of the Sith shows us that Anakin/Vader didn’t fall into a pit of lava. His body just caught on fire next to it.

5. Anakin’s Age

There was a jarring little detail fans pointed out with regards to Anakin Skywalker in the original release of Return of the Jedi. We see Anakin’s Force ghost standing next to Obi-Wan and Yoda, watching as Luke and his friends celebrate their victory over the Empire. In the original release, we see that Anakin is almost the same age as Obi-Wan Kenobi, based on what he looked like. The thing is, the original plan was to have Anakin be a teenager in what would become “The Phantom Menace”, rather than a 9-year-old boy. Seeing as Obi-Wan was in his mid-twenties, it would have lessened the age gap and shown that they were almost the same age.
