3 Running Gags in Megas XLR

gibsonkecmoz

I dig giant robots. You dig giant robots. We dig giant robots. Chicks dig giant robots. You know how it goes. We all know how it goes. Megas XLR was an amazing show back in the day. It had its charm and competed heavily with Samurai Jack on Cartoon Network. The show was about three humans who worked together to protect the Earth from threats, mostly an alien race that conquered the earth in the future. One of the three was a soldier from the future who wanted to use time travel technology to send a mech to the battle of the last stand, in which humanity lost, in order to change the outcome of the war. This mech is MEGAS. Unfortunately, due to an accident during a pilot transfer sequence from her own mech into MEGAS, the time flux control unit was desynchronized and sent MEGAS to the 20th Century, and trapped her and the Glorft, the invading aliens, in the timestream. In present day, Coop found it and wanted to use it to live a carefree life with his friend Jamie. Coop then unwittingly activated the tracking device in MEGAS and led the Kiva (the soldier from the future) and the Glorft to the present, and ever since, the three of them have had to defend the earth or just fight wherever Coop leads them to. The adventures they had led to many entertaining stories for the audience, and throughout the show, we managed to pick up on a few gags that are persistent throughout its two season run. This article will bring a few of them to light.

1. Coooooooooool

There’s no shortage of action in Jersey City, especially in Megas XLR. It’s where our trio of heroes lives. Things always go from bad to worse in the fights that take place in the city, and Coop often resorts to using everything he can think of in order to defeat his enemies. Sometimes they’re tactful things, and other times it’s just overindulgence in his destructive tendencies, which, quite frankly, he enjoyed deep down, no matter how bad it was. In the midst of all the chaos that ensues during the fights, there’s almost always a shot with little Tommy coming across something weird or just watching everything and saying his line, “Cooool.” He always says it the exact same way, too. He’s always amazed by what he sees. He’s never scared or anything. He’s also never more excited than usual. It’s just a cool “cooool”.

2. Jersey City Always Gets Destroyed

This is way funnier than it should be. It’s actually quite sad. The people of Jersey just can’t catch a break with Coop and his antics. Not only is Coop mostly responsible for what happens in Jersey, he is equally responsible for what happens on all the planets that he visits. The universe dreads the day Coop got his hands on Megas. Although he means well, he more often than not destroys everything in the environment in order to achieve victory. Even when he doesn’t want to, he still ends up doing it. An example of a time he didn’t want to was when he went to rescue the S-Force in “S-Force S.O.S.”. After the end of the battle, the day was saved, and the enemy’s giant serpent robot was to be a monument. Coop accidentally knocked it down and it destroyed the whole city. Another time he unwittingly destroyed the place was when he stumbled upon a planet full of seemingly peaceful robots that were constantly being reprogrammed. Coop liberated them and destroyed the reprogramming tower. He left the planet after that, and the audience (and Jamie) found out that it was actually a prison planet and housed dangerous criminals. They ended up destroying the planet. It wasn’t him, but it was because of him. It’s a wonder how the government never goes after Coop. Everything in Jersey just goes back to normal in the next episode.

3. The Glorft are Always Defeated by Accident

This is the most recurring one and probably flew over a lot of people’s heads. Although the most significant defeats were seen to be accidental, upon closer inspection, one will see that almost every defeat the Glorft suffered at the hands of Coop was accidental, starting from the first one. There is only one where Coop beat them due to his skill, and that was in “Terminate Her”, an episode where the Glorft tried to kill Kiva’s ancestor so that she is never born and MEGAS is never sent to the past. That was the only episode when he beat them with skill. He just pummeled all the mechs and did it so bad that they were even exploding while retreating. The first time he defeated them was when a satellite he accidentally shot in the beginning of the fight landed on Gorath’s giant mech that was about to crush MEGAS. The second time he defeated them, it was Jamie, who, being scared of sitting in the back seat, took the steering wheel by force and turned it while Coop played chicken with Gorath, leading Gorath into a TNT building. The third time was when Coop accidentally destroyed the planet-sized monster that wanted to devour the Earth and its pieces went to destroy a canon the Glorft were working on that would destroy the Earth. Gorath was so dumbfounded by that that he outright complained, wondering how it’s possible that he loses so consistently to Coop. Things like this are what happen throughout the show and it gets really funny the more we see it.
